Many Customers and Friends consult us about what can and can not be protected with Cathodic Protection.

Serve these lines to give some general guidelines that we hope, clarify the doubt. So that,

What can and can not be protected with cathodic protection?

We can apply cathodic protection to metallic surfaces IN CONTACT WITH WATER OR WITH EARTH.

For example:

1. Submerged parts of ships.

2. Interior of water tanks.

3. Exterior of the tank bases on the ground.

4. Buried tanks.

5. Underground and submerged pipes.

6. Submerged and driven piles, etc.

We can not cathodically protected metallic surfaces that are NOT SUBMERGED AND IN CONTACT WITH WATER OR EARTH.

For example:

1. In the BOAT OF A BOAT is protected only the part that at any moment is submerged.

2. In the interior of a TANK in which the level of the water varies, the submerged surface is protected at any moment.

3. It is NOT protected what is isolated, for example painted areas (without pores and without defects and painting) of any of the above mentioned metallic structures.

It is very difficult to find a metal surface whose coating or paint has no defects, so that pipes buried with coatings of excellent quality are always protected.

A pipe that is buried and at one point becomes aerial, only the buried part is protected.

A special case of a buried or submerged pipe whose cathodic protection can not be guaranteed is when it is insulated to maintain heat or heat.

Where insulation defects can penetrate water, it impregnates the coating that comes into contact with the metal surface and however, due to the characteristics of the coating that is not well adhered to said metal surface, the cathodic protection current can not reach the Recesses that run through the water until reaching the metal surface.
